Good morning nostr, i got the laundry going while i enjoy my coffee. I heard rain outside again, a peaceful rain without lightning or thunder. Its thursday, so i'll be doing the weekly chicken coop cleanup and filling food containers. Yesterday one of my husband's pigeons was in the chicken run, looking for seeds i guess. Then the dinosaur in the chickens came out, and they started pecking at him and forced out the intruder. It was fun to watch. Even if we assume away the problem of data availability it wouldn't be great to have the entirety of the world's monetary transactions depend on a single company building the blocks and publishing zk-proofs. I guess you can say this block generation can be made to be more open, but I think the incentives are that it would be very centralized regardless, no?
It's a similar problem of Spark: even if you could make it be totally trustless it would still be bad for it to be controlled by a single company.

if I made a personal Nostr client, it would make a non-scrollable page to eliminate "doomscrolling'. it would have news boxes that would open each thread of conversation. once the threads were complete, the boxes would not renew with convos until the next defined time period.
Actually, Coracle already kinda looks like this. The boxes that have to be opened to "view thread" or "view parent" is a little bit of resistance. When I click "view thread" i'm falling into the thing that got my attention. when I click the X or click out of it, i'm exiting.

⚡️🇺🇸 NEW - A 36-year-old man in Colorado is suing the hospital where he was born for allegedly switching him with another child at birth.
Jeremy Morrison says he always felt different than his family and decided to get a DNA test a couple of years ago.
When he got the test back, he found out that his parents were not actually his parents.
"I know I definitely wouldn’t be here in Colorado today if I went home with the right parents. I would have been working the farm with my older brother that I never knew I had," he said.
Morrison says he was switched with Kyle Bylin, who was born just hours apart at the same hospital in Grafton, North Dakota, in 1988.
Morrison went home with Bylin's biological parents, and Bylin went home with Morrison's biological parents.
Both of the men and their families are suing Unity Medical Center. They are demanding more than $50,000 and a jury trial.

⚡️🇺🇸 WTF - A plane in the United States was forced to land after the sound of the adhan was heard from a passenger's phone.
A Southwest Airlines flight traveling from Tennessee to Florida was forced to make an emergency landing in Atlanta. Upon landing, a SWAT team boarded the aircraft and detained one of the passengers, accusing him of terrorism and posing a bomb threat.
It was later revealed that the detained passenger was a Muslim. During the flight, his prayer-time app activated and played the adhan (the Islamic call to prayer). The crew reportedly interpreted the sound as a potential security threat, notified dispatchers, and decided to make an emergency landing.

Why kill the golden goose?
If you have a 4-7 year mandate (literally need to give back investor capital at the end), you’re in a rush to do that. Get as many eggs out of the goose as possible until it is sick, then slaughter it. Then keep doing that. Buy geese, optimize near-term eggs.
But if there’s no near-term mandate to return capital, holding strong business can provide cash flows for decades. That’s what Berkshire does with companies it buys outright. Lets them run for decades, multiplying the entry price over and over. OJ intends to go public in the coming years, so investors can sell their shares for liquidity while the company itself keeps compounding cash flows.

PE funds typically spin out a business with high debt when they are done. Hollowed them out, setting them up with a high failure rate after value has been extracted.
When we buy a business, it’ll become part of the OJ company, which is intended to to be managed with a strong balance sheet. If a business we own runs into a challenge or could benefit from more capital, it has backup from the parent company.
Our holding period is intended to be decades or more. Like what Berkshire Hathaway does with its wholly-owned acquisitions.
Nothing lasts forever, and there are scenarios where we might have to wind something down or let it go, but the point is we intend to buy companies and hold them indefinitely or until the company one day becomes unviable. We don’t have a 4-7 year mandate to flip it out.

Yes, I thought about that. It would be cleaner though if I can just tell people to contact me directly at my regular npub. Also using another key for DMs doesn't necessarily address the issue of being able to promise some degree of privacy to the people who contact you.
It's one thing to use DMs with people you're already acquainted with. It's another thing to go out and solicit the general Nostr user base to send you DMs. After all, the persons you're soliciting might then have an expectation that the info they send you is kept private, and I'm wondering if Nostr DMs are mature enough to justify that expectation.
Maybe the solution is just to tell people that they can DM you, but attach a disclaimer that I don't actually fully know how well DMs currently guarantee privacy.
Just something I thought about recently, and your post reminded me of it.
