Explication : Un loup noir se cache dans la nébuleuse Gum 55. Non, ce n'est pas une énigme ! L'image du jour présente la nébuleuse du Loup Noir (Sandqvist-Lindroos 17), un nuage de poussière mystérieux niché au cœur de la nébuleuse Gum 55 (RCW 113), dans la constellation du Scorpion. Si la poussière nous est souvent incommodante, elle joue un rôle essentiel dans la création des conditions nécessaires à la naissance des étoiles. Le Loup Noir absorbe le rayonnement ultraviolet et visible intense émis par les jeunes étoiles de Gum 55 et le réémet à des longueurs d'onde plus longues, principalement infrarouges. Ceci empêche la lumière de haute énergie de réchauffer le gaz de la région. Lorsqu'une région de gaz est suffisamment froide, la gravité agit et provoque l'effondrement du gaz pour former une étoile. La poussière n'agit pas seulement comme un thermostat interstellaire, elle est aussi le lieu de rencontre des atomes d'hydrogène qui forment l'hydrogène moléculaire, élément constitutif des étoiles. Le Loup Noir, d'apparence sinistre, est en réalité un signe avant-coureur de la vie cosmique.
