That's a very narrow view given that openai and Anthropic both stole IP to include in their training data and are facing a bunch of lawsuits as a result. They steal IP and lock it up behind closed weight models that you need to pay for. Chinese startups on the other hand are doing everything in the open. They're also doing a shitload of research which openai and Anthropic are using for free, the most advanced research behind the American AI industry is all Chinese, to the point that half of their internal slack messages are in Chinese.

Firstly, read the OP. I did a full federal criminal trial, with *successful* appeal that established good precedent in the law for everyone on the Internet. My case is an actual cornerstone in the appellate defenses of Bitcoin trials, and is poised to make a circuit split if the court rules against Sterlingov in his Bitcoin mixing case. So I am very familiar with what things cost. It does *not* cost a million dollars to do document review. If they were actually interested in doing what rights organizations want (which is what Odell was LARPing as when he claimed to be a “p2p rights” organization) 200k would be a lavish budget to go all the way to trial, and then they can reraise money for appeal. They need motions preserved for appeals. That’s it.
Of course, that’s not what was going on here. They didn’t choose reputable computer crimes attorneys. This looks like a rug pull. Someone got 970k! There’s 970k missing! It costs 30k to do a plea! If you have raised a million dollars of other people’s money, you have a fiduciary duty to actually make sure it is not a donation to a law firm or someone’s family! And that’s the problem: Odell consistently throws around other people’s money without any sense of fiduciary duty. He does nothing but harm Nostr, harm Bitcoin, harm “P2P rights”. He acts in naked self-interest.

Giving a clean million for a plea deal, which generally costs 30k (or free, federal defenders are actually good at this) is a waste of 970k of people’s money. He basically lit a million dollars on fire, which should have gone to an actually useful appeal effort. He doesn’t run a “p2p rights” organization, because rights organizations have the goal of actually making precedent that protects peoples rights, not making million dollar donations to law firms.
He wasted a million dollars, yes, he should get blasted.
